Job Title: Legal Information Officer
Location: Nasc, Cork City, Ireland
Salary: €32,000 p/a pro rata
Terms and conditions of employment: 22.5 hours per week. Three year fixed-term contract (subject to funding).
Starting date: 27th November 2017

OVERVIEW OF ORGANISATION:

Nasc is the Irish word for “link”. Nasc works to link migrants and ethnic minorities to their rights through protecting human rights, promoting integration and campaigning for change. Our mission is to enable migrants and ethnic minorities to access justice and human rights and work to achieve a just, inclusive and equal society.

Nasc operates a legal clinic offering a free walk-in service and an appointment-based service providing legal advice and information on a range of immigration and asylum issues.

OVERVIEW OF ROLE:

The Legal Information Officer will report directly to the Legal Service Manager and work under the supervision of the Legal Service Manager.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:

  1. To provide advice, information and advocacy on a one-to-one basis on a range of immigration and protection related issues through both the walk-in and appointments system;
  2. To maintain an individual caseload and carry out administrative tasks as may be required;
  3. To support the CEO and Legal Service Manager with advocacy and case-work;
  4. To identify case-work of strategic importance and take appropriate action as directed by the Legal Service Manager;
  5. To prepare materials for, and deliver training or capacity building sessions to other NGOs, statutory and non-statutory bodies as may be required;
  6. To prepare materials for, and deliver outreach sessions on matters relating to immigration or asylum law;
  7. To assist in the recruitment and training of new volunteers, interns and staff from time to time;
  8. To represent Nasc at various consultative fora and events as required.
  9. Any other duties as may reasonably be required from time to time in connection with this position.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION:

Knowledge, skills and experience

Essential:

  • A Law Degree or equivalent;
  • Demonstrable experience working with clients in a similar organisation, preferably working with immigration, protection or human rights law and policy;
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills including fluent spoken and written English;
  • Thorough knowledge of immigration and asylum law and policy;
  • Strong organisational skills with experience of managing multiple tasks and adhering to deadlines in a busy office environment;
  • Ability to work independently to general guidelines; capacity to take initiatives and also to work under supervision;
  • Computer literate (Word for Windows, Powerpoint, Internet, Microsoft Office 365);
  • Flexible, can-do attitude, good team player and ability to cope with stress;
  • Permission to work in Ireland.

Desirable:

  • Postgraduate degree;
  • Experience managing own case load;
  • Additional language;
