For immediate release
22 May 2018

Nasc, the Migrant and Refugee Rights Centre is pleased to announce that students attending its Information and Communication Technology Course will be receiving their awards from the Lord Mayor Tony Fitzgerald in a ceremony in the Council Chambers in Cork City Hall on 25th May 2018.

8 students from migrant, refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds will be receiving their QQI Level 3 awards from the Lord Mayor at the ceremony; 6 of those will be receiving major awards. Students from this year’s course will also be in attendance.

The group of students receiving awards come from a diversity of backgrounds and many have not had many opportunities previously to acquire skills and training.

“This is an incredible achievement for people who have faced many personal and practical challenges in their lives and may have found it difficult to access further education and training courses in the past,” states Nasc CEO Fiona Finn. “We are thrilled with the successes of our students, in particular the 6 students who successfully attained major awards this past year.”

“These awards are a stepping stone to accessing further education and employment. Having their achievement recognised by the Lord Mayor in the Council Chambers of Cork City Hall really allows the students to celebrate what they have achieved since coming to Ireland and this is an important moment for them and their families. It also provides a strong motivation to the current course participants who are attending to keep going with the course, even when it is challenging,” continues Ms Finn.

The Information and Communications Technology Course is facilitated by Mr. Moawia Eldjack and hosted in Nasc’s office on Ferry Lane. The course includes six modules, including: Microsoft Word, Spreadsheets, Internet Skills, Computer Literacy, Communications and Mathematics. It is funded through the Cork Education and Training Board. Nasc has been hosting this course for over 10 years.

Previous awardees have gone on to further education at Cork College of Commerce and St. John’s College, and on to employment throughout Cork City.

The ceremony will take place on Friday 25th May at 5:30 PM in the Lord Mayor’s Council Chambers in Cork City Hall. There will be a reception for awardees and their families afterwards.
