Nasc and Cork YMCA mark Anti-Trafficking Day tomorrow
Nasc, the Irish Immigrant Support Centre and Cork YMCA are coming together to mark Anti-Trafficking Day on Friday 18th October from 2:30 – 3:00 PM at the Cork YMCA building on Marlboro Street. There will be a photo call at 3PM with Lord Mayor Catherine Clancy, where participants will release red balloons as part of Turn Off the Red Light commemoration of the day.
The event will focus on the ‘Dared to Dream’ photo exhibition currently showing in Cork YMCA. ‘Dared to Dream’ is a series of twelve portraits bringing to light the ‘dubious business of sex trafficking’. The project was developed by three young women from Cork YMCA, to raise awareness about human trafficking.
The ‘Dared to Dream’ exhibition has been on display in Cork YMCA since July. The three young women who developed the project took part in a Social Advertising Training in Moldova with a focus on immigration and unemployment. This Youth in Action event was funded by Léargas.
Project leader Catherine Leahy of Cork YMCA states:
“I was delighted to travel over with the three girls and they put so much work into this project. They particularly hope that the photos help raise awareness about the grim trade of human trafficking and that people will take action through the Turn Off the Red Light Campaign by emailing your elected TDs and Senators and urging them to pass legislation targeting the buyers of sex.”
As members of the Turn Off the Red Light Campaign, Nasc along with its 65+ partners campaign to change legislation to criminalise the purchase of sex, thus eliminating demand for sex trafficking.
Nasc CEO Fiona Finn states:
“It is incredibly important to mark Anti-Trafficking Day and to keep the spotlight on this issue. The Justice Committee has recommended criminalising the purchase of sex to end sex trafficking. Now is the time for the Minister for Justice to act and introduce legislation. Every day Minister Shatter waits, more young women, girls and boys are trafficked for sexual exploitation.”
