Nasc host Cork launch of Roma – One People, Many Lives

Tue, April 8, 2014

Roma exhibit launch poster_Cork_webNasc is pleased to announce the opening of a photo exhibition that challenges stereotypes of the Roma Community in Ireland. Roma – One People, Many Lives will be launched in Cork on Monday 14th April 2014 at 6PM in Cork City Library, Grand Parade.

The exhibition will be opened by Minister Kathleen Lynch. Speakers include: Laurence Bond of the Equality Authority; Greucean Adam, Roma rights activist and Fiona Finn, CEO of Nasc.

The exhibition was coordinated jointly by the Equality Authority, Pavee Point and Nasc, the Irish Immigrant Support Centre and funded by EU PROGRESS.

‘Roma – One People, Many Lives’ provides a unique opportunity to meet a number of Roma people who live, study and work here in Ireland. It also shows that people from the Roma community face many challenges in Ireland.

The exhibition was formally launched in Dublin City Hall on 28th February but as many of the participants in the exhibition are based in Cork, we are hosting a Cork launch of the exhibition so members of the Cork Roma community and participants in the project are able to attend.

The exhibition will be up for two weeks in the foyer of the City Library.

Nasc CEO Fiona Finn comments ahead of the launch:

“It is a very positive and engaging exhibition that goes a long way towards challenging stereotypes of Roma in Ireland. We were delighted to be involved in such a positive project and we encourage the people of Cork to come to the City Library and take the opportunity to learn a bit about the Roma community who live here.

“We are hosting the exhibition in April as part of our events to mark the International Day of the Roma – a day to recognise Roma people and culture and to remember the discrimination Roma have experienced throughout Europe.”

More information about the exhibition is available for download here. You can join the Facebook event here and the event poster is available here.

Other events to mark the International Day of the Roma include a film screening of our documentary Roma – From Heudin to Here on 8th April in the Nasc Event Room at 6pm.
