Roma

Participants of the Roma Leadership and Advocacy Training

Today, Nasc is launching a week long social media campaign which aims to challenge some of the negative stereotypes that face the Roma community, and instead to highlight what makes individuals proud to have a Roma identity and to be a part of the Roma community. The social media campaign, which was designed by members of the Roma community themselves, is being launched this week as part of plans to to mark International Human Rights day which falls on December 10th.

Making Roma Rights Real

In September, as part of Nasc’s project – Making Roma Rights Real -members of the Roma community participated in a two day training on leadership and advocacy. The training consisted of a number of themed sessions such as Introduction to human rights, Equality and non-discrimination, campaigning and community development. The overall aims of the training were for participants to become more rights aware and to learn practical ways to advocate for themselves and the community. As well as these aims, it was also an opportunity for the community to come together to identify the issues facing the community and to form a Roma Advocacy Group to tackle these issues.

#ProudToBeRoma

The Roma Advocacy Group identified discrimination and negative stereotypes as one of the major issues affecting their community in a variety of ways. They decided that they would use their voices through a social media campaign to highlight Roma culture positively and to show the wider Irish public why they are proud to be Roma. One of the issues that came up within the group discussions was that much of the Irish public knows very little about the Roma community or what they think they know is in fact, misinformation. Therefore as a group, the Roma Advocacy Group came up with some facts that perhaps people would be surprised to know.

Over the course of this week, Nasc will be publishing daily some of the Roma facts and statements  created by the Roma advocacy group to Twitter and Facebook. We would encourage support and participation from other organisations and individuals. Get involved! #ProudToBeRoma #MakingRomaRightsReal #HumanRightsDay2015
