IFCO Foster Care Conference

Fiona Hurley

Nasc’s Fiona Hurley and Susan Mackey attended and presented at the 2014 European Conference organised by the International Foster Care Organisation (IFCO) today. The three day conference (August 26th – 29th),  hosted at the Waterford Institute of Technology, is on “Ensuring the Rights of the Child, and Family-based Services”.

The theme of IFCO 2014 European Conference invites workshop ideas, plenary topics and attendees who envision foster care, and indeed, all alternative care as the holistic system that IFCO promotes. Content and discussion therefore includes preventative measures which support families to stay together, quality of foster care, family & individual supports and intervention, reintegration of families, and after care for care leavers. The conference also covers research, outcomes and the impact of foster care at individual, family, societal, policy and international levels.

Nasc’s Legal Officer Fiona Hurley spoke on ‘Children in Care and the Irish Immigration and Protection Systems’ while Susan Mackey presented her research on “Rebuilding Family Life: Family Reunification Experiences for Female Refugees”.

Susan Mackey Commented;

“The importance of providing transitional support to families reunited under family reunification cannot be underestimated. Social workers should be involved before the fire starts rather than intervening after the crisis point has already arrived.”
