Nasc welcomes Oireachtas report on cyberbullying

Thu, July 18, 2013

Nasc welcomes the publication of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communication’s report on social media and cyberbullying today. You can read the report here.

During the Committee hearings, Nasc made a submission based on our experience dealing with online racism and the difficulties victims of online racism experience receiving redress, as well as the difficulties public officials (e.g. An Garda Síochána and the DPP) experience in prosecuting online racism. We are happy to see our insights and recommendations included in the report.

Nasc CEO Fiona Finn states,

“Without adequate redress to tackle online racism, victims and communities suffer while offenders are left free to peddle their hate speech in public forums. Much work needs to be done across local, national and international platforms to protect victims of all forms of cyber hate crimes.”
