Speakers' Panel sub-group
Past Activities

In the past Nasc’s Speaker’s Panel have given numerous talks and workshops on migrant and asylum-seeker issues and challenges, interculturalism, anti-racism etc.  We have worked with a wide range of groups, schools, colleges, statutory and voluntary organisations.

We have produced a publication entitled “In our own Words” which documents our experiences of using development education techniques in this work.

The group have been running the Country of Origin Project for a number of years, which aims to raise understandings about development issues and create awareness about why people come to live in Ireland.

'Radio On' Programme: On the 12th of September, members of the Speakers' Panel as well as people affected by family reunification took part in a community radio programme with the station 'Radio On'.
The hour long programme was divided into two halves, in the first thirty minutes, Gertrude Cotter, Director of Nasc, Colm Stanley, immigration solicitor and member of Nasc's Board, Mariam Olusoji and Marie Claire, who have both been affected deeply by family reunification issues were in conversation about the reasons why people leave their country of origin without their families and the difficulties they face in reuniting with them.
In the second half of the programme, Denise O'Donovan, journalist from the Evening Echo, Zeph Ikeh, who sits on Nasc's Board, and Godfrey Odiase, a new member of Nasc's Speakers' Panel, were in conversation about development issues, the media and representations and misrepresentations of Africa and particularly Nigeria in the Irish press.
