I am writing to ask you to support the Safe Passage Campaign which would introduce a humanitarian admission programme to reunite families fleeing conflict. Nasc Ireland have developed this campaign based on 16 years of experience providing legal advice and support to refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants in Ireland.

Firstly, Nasc are calling on the Government to introduce a Humanitarian Admission Programme that would enable refugees, migrants and naturalised citizens to apply for their extended family members who are currently displaced or living in conflict zones to join them here.

This is particularly urgent now that the new International Protection Act has commenced, as there is now no safety net for refugees to bring their extended families here to safety.

A Humanitarian Admission Scheme would be relatively easy for the Irish Government to implement, because:
1)	A similar scheme operated for a short period in 2014 to reunite Syrian families (the Syrian Humanitarian Admission Scheme)
2)	The Department of Justice already has an option to exercise exceptional discretion on family reunification decisions for non-refugee and naturalised citizen applications

Secondly, Nasc are calling on the Government to enable Irish citizens and organisations to co-sponsor a family reunification application. This could be done through a Sponsorship Scheme, where individuals, community groups, church groups, businesses, etc could support an individual’s family reunification application, offering monetary support or support in kind, such as employment, housing, and other integration opportunities. It allows Irish people to help people in crisis and has the added bonus of creating no additional burden on State resources.

These are demanding times and we are living in the midst of an exceptional humanitarian crisis, the likes of which we have not seen since World War II. I am asking you to do everything within your power, as my representative, to simply help people be reunited with their families.
